Why won't banks finance a Kei Truck?
A regular car loan is secured by the vehicle. The lender's name goes on the title, and if the payments stop, the lender takes the truck and sells it. So before it lends, it wants proof the truck is worth the money and easy to resell. A 25-year-old Kei Truck makes that hard in four ways.
- It's too old. Most car loans have a cutoff for model year or mileage, and a truck from the 1990s is far past it.
- There's no book value. Lenders size used-car loans from value guides. Japanese-market Kei Trucks usually aren't in them, so there's no number to lend against.
- The ID number doesn't fit. Trucks built for Japan are identified by a frame number, like HA4-1234567. Loan systems built around 17-character VINs often can't take it, the same snag owners hit with insurance.
- The paperwork may still be moving. A fresh import can be waiting on its first US title, and a secured lender needs a title to record its lien.
Trucks newer than 25 years have a bigger problem. They come into the US as off-road vehicles and can't be titled for road use, so they don't qualify for a car loan at all. The bank isn't saying no to you. It's saying no to the truck.
How does LightStream financing work for a Kei Truck?
LightStream is the online lending arm of Truist Bank. Its loans are unsecured, which means the truck isn't collateral. There's no appraisal, no lien on the title and nothing to prove about the truck's value. LightStream says it places no restrictions on a vehicle's year, make, model or mileage, and you can buy from a dealer or a private seller.
Here's what LightStream's own site says as of October 2026:
| Detail | What LightStream says |
|---|---|
| Who it is | Truist Bank's online lender, serving all 50 states |
| Loan type | Unsecured, so no lien on the truck |
| Loan size | $5,000 to $100,000 |
| Vehicle limits | None on year, make, model or mileage |
| Down payment | Not required |
| Fees | None, and no penalty for paying it off early |
| Rate | Set by loan purpose, amount, term and your credit. The lowest rates need excellent credit and AutoPay. |
| Funding | Straight into your bank account, as soon as the day you apply |
| Applying | Online only, no pre-approval, and a hard credit inquiry |
| Use | Personal use only. The money can't go toward a business. |
Rates change, so check the current numbers on LightStream's site before you apply.
Here's how it plays out with a dealer:
- Pick the truck and get the full price from the dealer, delivery included.
- Check your rate with LightStream and apply online. Choose the loan purpose that matches the purchase, such as a used vehicle from a dealer.
- Sign the loan and pick your funding date. The money lands in your bank account.
- Pay the dealer as a cash buyer. Confirm their payment details by phone before you send a wire. The title comes to you with no lender on it.
- Line up insurance before the truck arrives. Our insurance guide covers who writes policies.
Which lenders do Kei Truck dealers suggest?
Six of the seven dealers we list point buyers to LightStream. Here are the lenders each one names on its own website, as of October 15, 2026.
- LightStream
- Collector Car Lending
- J.J. Best Banc
- Woodside Credit
Sunshine Imports doesn't list financing online, so ask that dealer directly.
These dealers don't lend the money themselves. The lender pays you, and you pay the dealer. Lenders can change, so check the dealer's page before you apply.
What would the monthly payment be?
Plug in the price and the rate a lender quotes you. It's simple loan math, so treat it as an estimate.

Use the price with delivery and the APR a lender quotes you. The 10% shown is only an example. This is fixed-rate loan math, so your lender's numbers are the real ones.
Can a credit union finance a Kei Truck?
Sometimes. Credit unions set their own rules, and some will lend on older vehicles, right-hand-drive vehicles or UTVs. Two of the dealers we list name one:
- Japan Direct Motors points rural mail carriers to Center Parc Credit Union for right-hand-drive vehicle loans.
- Mini Monsters USA points side-by-side and utility vehicle buyers to Mountain America Credit Union.
If your credit union won't write an auto loan on an import, ask about a personal loan. Like LightStream's, that money isn't tied to the truck.
What about collector car lenders?
Collector car lenders such as J.J. Best Banc, Woodside Credit and Collector Car Lending finance older and specialty vehicles, and several of the dealers we list name them next to LightStream. Before you apply, ask three questions:
- Is the loan secured by the truck? If it is, the lender goes on the title until the loan is paid off, and the truck needs a US title first.
- What's the smallest loan they'll write?
- Will they accept a Japanese frame number in place of a VIN?
How do you finance an off-road Kei Truck?
Kei Trucks newer than 25 years are sold for off-road use, the same as a side-by-side. A car loan won't cover one, since it can't be titled for the road. An unsecured loan doesn't care about the title. Dealers we list that sell off-road trucks, such as Weatherford Mini Trucks, Dakota Mini Trucks and Mini Monsters USA, point buyers to LightStream. Mini Monsters also names a credit union that writes UTV loans.
Can you finance a Kei Truck for a farm or business?
Not with LightStream. It lends to individuals for personal use, and it says loan money can't go toward business purposes. If the truck will work on a farm, ranch or job site run as a business, ask your bank or farm lender about an equipment loan or a business line of credit. The dealer can tell you what other business buyers have used.
What else do buyers use?
- Cash. Plenty of buyers pay cash, and it's the simplest deal for everyone.
- A personal loan from your own bank. A bank that won't write a car loan on the truck may still offer an unsecured personal loan.
- A home equity loan or line of credit. Rates are often lower, but your house secures the loan.
What should you have ready before you apply?
- The full price: truck, delivery, sales tax, title and plates.
- A look at your credit report, since applying is a hard inquiry.
- An insurance quote, especially if the truck will be registered for the road.
- The truck's year, model and frame number, in case a lender asks.

Frequently asked questions
Can you finance a Kei Truck?
Yes, though rarely with a regular car loan. Buyers who borrow mostly use an unsecured loan, which isn't tied to the truck, so its age and import history don't get in the way. LightStream is the lender the dealers we list name most often.
Does LightStream finance Kei Trucks?
Yes. LightStream's loans are unsecured, and it says it places no restrictions on a vehicle's year, make, model or mileage. Most of the Kei Truck dealers we list send buyers to LightStream, and several call it their financing partner.
Why won't my bank finance a 25-year-old car?
A bank car loan uses the car as collateral, so lenders set cutoffs for age and mileage and size the loan from used-car value guides. A 25-year-old Japanese import is past those cutoffs, isn't listed in the guides and often has no 17-character VIN for their systems.
Can you get a loan for an off-road mini truck?
Yes, just not a car loan. Off-road mini trucks can't be titled for road use, so buyers pay for them the way they'd pay for a side-by-side: an unsecured loan, or a UTV loan from a credit union.
Do Kei Truck dealers offer in-house financing?
Most don't lend money themselves. The dealers we list point buyers to outside lenders, usually LightStream, and some also name collector car lenders or credit unions. Ask the dealer which lenders their buyers have used.
What credit score do you need to finance a Kei Truck?
There's no single number, since each lender sets its own rules. LightStream says its lowest rates require excellent credit, and applying puts a hard inquiry on your credit report.
Can you use a LightStream loan for a farm truck?
Only for personal use. LightStream lends to individuals, not businesses, and says loan money can't go toward business purposes. Farm and business buyers usually look at equipment or business financing instead.
Do you need a down payment to finance a Kei Truck?
Not with LightStream, which says it doesn't require one. Collector car lenders and credit unions set their own rules, and some ask for money down.
