Is the Toyota Pixis Truck a real Toyota?
It wears Toyota badges, but Daihatsu builds it. Toyota launched its first Kei commercial vehicles, the Pixis Van and Pixis Truck, in Japan on December 1, 2011, and sold them through more than 200 Toyota dealers. Daihatsu supplies both under a Kei vehicle agreement the two companies signed in September 2010, and the first Pixis Trucks came from Daihatsu's plant in Oita, on Kyushu. Daihatsu itself is a Toyota company, wholly owned since 2016.
Underneath, nothing changes. The frame, engine, gearbox and body match the Daihatsu Hijet Truck, and the Toyota chassis code simply ends in U where Daihatsu's ends in P:
| Toyota Pixis Truck | Same as Daihatsu Hijet | Built | First legal US imports |
|---|---|---|---|
| S201U (2WD), S211U (4WD) | S201P, S211P | December 2011 to September 2014 | From January 2037 |
| S500U (2WD), S510U (4WD) | S500P, S510P | September 2014 on | From October 2039 |
Can you import a Toyota Kei Truck to the US?
Not yet. Federal law lets in a vehicle that was never built to US safety standards once it is at least 25 years old, counted from the month it was made. The oldest Pixis Trucks were built in December 2011, so the first ones become eligible in January 2037. Every truck after that waits for its own 25th anniversary; our 25-year rule guide explains the count and checks any build date.
The same rule is why no US dealer can sell you a new Toyota Kei Truck. A new Pixis Truck was never certified to US safety standards, so it can't come in for road use until it turns 25. If someone offers a 2010s Pixis Truck in the US, ask for the import paperwork before anything else. Our buying guide lists what a legal import should come with.
What is the closest thing to a Toyota Kei Truck you can buy today?
A Daihatsu Hijet. Daihatsu has built the Hijet since 1960, and as of October 2026 any Hijet made in October 2001 or earlier can be imported. That covers the S80P/S81P, S82P/S83P and S100P/S110P trucks and the early S200P/S210P. They come from the same maker and the same line of trucks that later became the Pixis Truck. Our Daihatsu Hijet guide covers chassis codes, the Jumbo cab and what to check before you buy.
Is there a new Toyota Kei Truck for 2025 or 2026?
In Japan, yes. Toyota still sells the Pixis Truck and updates it alongside the Hijet, so new model years keep showing up in Japanese listings. None of them can be sold new in the US, for the safety-standard reason above. For what each state allows once a truck is old enough, see our Kei Truck laws by state.
Is the Toyota Hilux a Kei Truck?
No. The Hilux is a much larger pickup, well beyond the Kei limits of 3.4 m (133.9 in) long, 1.48 m (58.3 in) wide and 660 cc. If you want something Kei-sized from the Toyota family, the Hijet is the answer.
Do Daihatsu Hijet parts fit a Toyota Pixis Truck?
Yes. Parts follow the Daihatsu chassis code, so an S201U or S211U Pixis Truck takes S201P/S211P Hijet parts, and an S500U or S510U takes S500P/S510P parts. Shop S201P/S211P Hijet parts and S500P/S510P Hijet parts at Oiwa Garage, or start with the older Hijets you can import today.
Frequently asked questions
Does Toyota make a Kei Truck?
Yes, but only for Japan. Toyota has sold the Pixis Truck, a rebadged Daihatsu Hijet built by Daihatsu, since December 2011. It isn't sold in the US, and none are old enough to import yet.
Is the Toyota Pixis Truck the same as a Daihatsu Hijet?
Yes. Daihatsu builds it, and it shares the Hijet's frame, engine, gearbox and body. The S201U and S211U match the S201P and S211P Hijet, and the S500U and S510U match the S500P and S510P.
When can a Toyota Pixis Truck be imported to the US?
From January 2037 for the first trucks, which were built in December 2011. Each truck becomes eligible the month after its 25th anniversary, so the S500U and S510U trucks start qualifying from October 2039.
Can I buy a new Toyota Kei Truck in the US?
No. A new Pixis Truck was never certified to US safety standards, so it can't be imported for road use until it is 25 years old, and no US dealer sells one new.
Do Hijet parts fit a Toyota Pixis Truck?
Yes, when the chassis codes match. Use S201P/S211P Hijet parts for an S201U or S211U, and S500P/S510P parts for an S500U or S510U.
Is the Toyota Hilux a Kei Truck?
No. The Hilux is far bigger than the Kei limits of 3.4 m long, 1.48 m wide and 660 cc. Toyota's only Kei Truck is the Pixis Truck.
